Do you have what it takes to be a cabaret champion? The Cabaret Showdown is now a monthly event taking place every second Sunday of the month at Under St. Marks! Contestants compete for the chance to star in their own show or cabaret. Come out and join the fun! Whether you are a contestant or in the audience you are guaranteed to have a blast. Hosted by Mark McDaniels with accompanist Joshua Stephen Kartes and special guest judges.

Attendees may sign up for a slot to sing at the event. However, we strongly recommend that you pre-register by sending your name and interest to cabaretshowdown@yahoo.com. There is a maximum of 8 contestants and slots will fill up quickly. Winners will receive a free one-hour booking at USM for their own show or cabaret to be performed the following month immediately after the next Cabaret Showdown.

Contestants will be asked to sing selections from various musical categories with no knowledge of what the song will be until right before they sing. All songs will be popular standards and to make things easier each contestant will be given a copy of the sheet music and will be accompanied by a live pianist. Our three judges will choose the winners based on how they interpret their song. We encourage all contestants to simply relax and HAVE FUN!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

Contestants will compete two at a time in rounds. We will flip a coin to see who goes first. The contestant who wins the coin toss will then choose a music category from the game board at which point a song will be revealed. They will then decide to either sing the song or pass the song to their competitor. If a song is passed to the competitor, that person will then have the opportunity to select a song category for their competitor after they sing. After each contestant sings the judges will select a winner to advance to the next round.

If a contestant does not know the song they will have the option of using a lifeline where they can pick someone out of the crowd who knows the song and can sing it in their place. Keep in mind that you only have one lifeline and if that person enables you to move to the next round and you do not know the song again then they will take your place for the rest of the Cabaret Showdown. We encourage you to bring friends who can be your lifeline.

Fresh off her win of last month’s CABARET SHOWDOWN presented by Horsetrade Theater Group, Sarah Anne Simmons is pleased to bring you “Hello, My Name is Sarah Simmons.....” an hour-long engagement not to be missed! Ms. Simmons will be joined onstage by actress/comedienne Anna Drezen and musician/comedienne Nicole Doring, with the incredible Matthew P. Walsh on piano. An unforgettable event filled with song, laughter and plenty of audience participation!!

But what fun is audience participation without an audience? THAT’S where YOU come in. Join in the fun at Under St. Marks, 94 St. Marks Place on January 8th @ 9PM!!!
